Scott Fitzgerald, Oren Arnold, and more.

The 5-volume Omnibus Edition of Authorized Images is the only complete version of Greg Gatenby’s massive history of how literary postcards came to be such a sensation in the decades either side of the year 1900. Between approximately 1890 (when picture postcards as a medium first became globally popular) through to 1930 (when the Depression ended most tourism and sales of postcards plummeted) postcards focussed on authors were all the rage throughout the developed world.  This extraordinary and widespread manifestation of interest in creative writers of fiction, poetry, and drama has been little studied—and most certainly has never been as comprehensively researched and documented as Gatenby has with this magnum opus, am undertaking 25 years in the making. The quintet of books comprises 5,361 pages, including over 4,000 full-colour reproductions of antique and vintage postcards focussed on the life and work of famed literary figures. Gatenby’s descriptive text offers a compelling account of how postcards in general came to be, followed by an extensive examination of the emergence of postcards with an overt literary bent: there are portraits of authors to be sure, but, as well, images abound of the homes where writers lived, schools they attended, places they worked, graves, memorials, busts and statues, as well as artists’ impressions of scenes from their fiction, dramas, and verses.

The first volume, in addition to containing a full history of postcards, has a thorough and yet compelling documentation of the worldwide (and apparently insatiable) hunger for postcards affiliated in any way with beloved authors. The final four volumes of Authorized Images combine heavily-illustrated treatment of 70 of the world’s most esteemed creative writers. Among these are many of the literary titans of Austria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. Almost all of the antique postcards reproduced in Authorized Images are appearing in a book for the first time. This fact makes the work an instant reference standard for scholars–yet simultaneously a seductive read for the casual book-lover wanting to be stunned by how beautiful so many of these vintage images are.

For those for whom the complete set of five volumes is too rich a banquet, there are 28 much shorter volumes devoted to a single writer, or, in a few cases to a small group of authors, such as the volume devoted to Byron, Keats, and Shelley. The postcard reproductions and accompanying text in these shorter volumes are identical to the images and text found in the Omnibus Edition.

In all, Gatenby’s prose across all five volumes totals 344,979 words.
